MATCH

2018 MEIJI YASUDA J2 LEAGUE 34th Sec - FC Gifu vs Tokyo Verdy

Match Report

【Match Report】

Last week, Verdy emerged from their home match against Roasso Kumamoto with a 2-2 draw. This week, the team hit the road for two consecutive away games, first against FC Gifu and then against Tochigi SC. Hoping to regain momentum after the previous week’s disappointment, Verdy made a number of changes to the squad. Yuta Narawa was moved to right back, allowing Yuki Kagawa to slot in at left back in his first start. At anchor, Tatusya Uchida ended his streak of consecutive starts, which traced back to the opening match of the season, and was replaced by Shion Inoue. In front of him were the pairing of Yuhei Sato and Ryota Kajikawa at inside half, while Jin Izumisawa rounded out the changes by taking a spot on the left wing.

The matched opened with Gifu retaining possession and taking the initiative in attack. For the second week in a row, the Verdy players struggled at first to move the ball around the opposition’s high press, letting their precision drop and failing to develop a passing rhythm. Once they were able to settle down, however, the team were able to build up from the back and use the full width of the pitch to attack the opposition goal. In the fourth minute, Kanya Fujimoto and Sato combined on the left side, enabling the latter to place a cross in front of goal while Douglas fought on the front line to connect. The second ball fell to Kajikawa, who tried to find the net first time but failed to get his shot on target. Following that chance, Verdy’s combination play would continue to bring them into the opposition area but in each case, their finishing let them down and the attacks ended with no result. In response, the momentum would gradually shift Gifu’s way. As their opponents tried to develop the play from the wide areas. Verdy struggled to win the ball in the center of the pitch and found themselves pushed further and further back into their own half. In the 39th minute, Koya Kazama made a deep run into space, threatening the Verdy goal, but his shot failed to find the target as well. Kazama would repeat the trick, however, at the close of the first half, finding space in front of goal for a powerful shot that sent Verdy into the half-time break down a goal.

Hoping to put the first half behind them, Verdy emerged from the break looking to push back and were nearly rewarded immediately after the whistle. Inoue took an early shot in the team’s first move and though his effort cannoned off the post, it immediately established the team’s intention to get something from the match. Later, in the 56th minute, the back line evaded the opposition pressure with one-touch passing, allowing Fujimoto to control the ball from a deep position in the Verdy half and play a long pass behind the defense. With an eye on the back line, Douglas dropped back to stay onside and then burst into space, looking to get on the ball. Though a defender tracked back to cover, Douglas was able to cut inside from the right and fire a left-footed shot that found the right corner of the net and brought the score level. Verdy now looked to finish the match off and streamed forward after their goal. Alan was brought on for Fujimoto and Leandro for Sato, giving the team a potent lineup of talented attackers. With their Brazilian trio combining up top, Verdy would continually threaten the goal, but were still lacking in their finishing. In the 79th minute, the team built through Douglas and advanced into the penalty area where Leandro tried a shot, only to see his effort fly straight into the chest of the goalkeeper. In the 86th minute, Kota Watanabe responded first to a lofted ball on the right wing and played a looping through pass behind the defense. Leandro emerged into the space with perfect timing and rounded the keeper, only to have his shot cleared away by a defender before it could reach the goal. For the remainder of the match, it was Verdy who were pushed back and unable to attack, even finding themselves on the other end of a dangerous opposition move that looked primed for the finish. In the end, however, the final whistle would sound with the score at 1-1 and Verdy walked away with their second consecutive draw.

With the team looking to strengthen their position in the upper reaches of the table, it cannot be denied that the last two results have seen the campaign stall. However, it is not true that they took nothing at all from both encounters. It is up to the players now to identify the necessary changes over the coming week and perform their best in training to prepare for the next match.

Your thoughts on the match?
I think we started well in the first half. We had the ball and we carried it forward into their penalty area. At about the 15-minute point, they started to control the ball more and dominate the play, which forced us to drop deeper in defense. Even when we had the ball, we couldn’t achieve any depth and as a team, we played without skill for the remainder of the half. After the break, we were able to raise our intensity and aim for goals. Even after the score went to 1-1, we used all three substitutions and tried to get the win. While we created the greater number of chances, it’s also true that they had some as well. Overall, I think a draw is a fair result.

Why did you choose Shion Inoue over Tatsuya Uchida today, despite Uchida having played in every match so far?
First of all, I would like to say that Shion (Inoue) has been training well and that he also played well during his appearances in the Emperor’s Cup. Uchida has been playing non-stop this season and this week I felt, both physically and mentally, that he needed a rest.

When the match was 1-1 and the play became more open, you had trouble winning the ball in midfield. What do you think was the reason?
First I think we have to stop giving up the ball. Especially against a team like Gifu, who try to dominate possession, losing the ball in the way we did hurt us a lot. The other element is that Gifu themselves played well. They haven’t been getting the results they would like lately, but from last season on, they’ve been playing excellent football, the kind I like to see. They find themselves down the table at the moment, but I think they deserve to be in a higher position. We shouldn’t forget that we were playing against a team of that quality.

Your thoughts on the match?
It was an away game but we came to get the three points. With so few matches left in the season, I think this may have been a bad result for us. However, I hope we will take the draw as a positive, address the finer problems that we are experiencing on the pitch, and prepare for the next match.

For your goal, it looked like the ball didn’t take the flight you expected.
I did well to create space for myself and I had a clear idea for the shot from the moment I cut inside to the center. I thought about aiming for the opposite corner, but the goalkeeper was in my field of vision and I could see which way he was leaning so I chose the near side. I’m glad it went in and I was happy to get a goal.

Tell us about your hopes for the next match.
I hope that for the next match, we can have a good turn out from our supporters. We need their support now more than ever and I hope that we can travel together to get the full three points.

This was your first start in a while. How did you feel at the start of the match?
I was able to play with energy for the first 5-10 minutes, but after that, they gradually took control of possession for long periods and we gave up the ball too easily. Overall, in the first half, it felt like we were playing at their pace.

As the match went on, you were involved in more positive moves, like your pass to Kajikawa for his first-time shot.
At the start of the first half, we were all getting on the ball with good tempo and were able to move it well. At a certain point, we had a series of mistakes where we lost the ball in bad areas and given their play style, that enabled them to retain the ball more and I think that gradually hurt our rhythm.

They made a point of putting the ball into the final third and were able to hold it up there a number of times. Did you feel they were aiming for the space behind you?
I did feel today that they were exploiting the gaps in our defense well, especially in the space around me. I think we should have tried to be more careful by tightening up in the center or dropping back to close the distance in our positions.

Your thoughts on the match?
At some point in the first half, they began to dominate the play. It’s true that the goal we conceded came at a bad time, but I think it’s also important for us to extend our time on the ball whenever we do win it. Today, a lot of our play was on the counter and we made mistakes in our passing. Against a team like Tochigi who are good at passing the ball themselves, you can’t afford to miss any chance to keep possession. The less we hang on to the ball when we get it, the less we’re going to see of the ball overall and each player needs to think about how they can use their strength to that aim. Otherwise, I think things are going to grow difficult for us.

Against an opponent who were content with earning a point, you weren’t able to win the ball in midfield and carry it forward from those areas.
Partly because of the heat and partly because they were able to move the ball against us more than other teams, we gradually lost the energy to press forward. Especially in midfield, Gifu are always looking to create numerical advantages, so in some ways it couldn’t be helped. On the other hand, our substitutions had an impact and the second half was much more open, which I think was better for us.

After Watanabe came on, he immediately won the ball. Is that more of what you were looking for?
I think it’s important that each of us make a difference individually. We were being man-marked today and the more open the play became, the more chances we had in 1 v 1’s. If we can win those, it will lead to a goal, as we saw. I think we needed to create more of those opportunities in the first half.

When passing the ball at the back, it didn’t seem like you had anywhere to play the ball into midfield.
It wasn’t that we had nowhere to go at all, but we couldn’t shake their markers in 1 v 1 situations. We don’t play well when we allow them to mark us man to man. I think that’s where individual ability is important and where we have to get two or three people combining in the play.
